Mikao Usui created the 5 reiki precepts in 1915.  It is believed they were adapted by Mikao Usui from an older set of Buddhist precepts that were taught in the 9th century and a part of the daily practice called Shugendo.

Some believe that Usui created a layperson’s version of the Buddhist 8-fold path when he created the five reiki precepts.

The 8-fold path teaches

  • right views
  • right thinking
  • right speech
  • right action
  • right way of life
  • right endeavour
  • right mindfulness
  • right meditation

Regardless of their exact origin and inspiration, it is clear that the 5 Reiki principles act as the foundation for the entire system of Reiki. They are meditations for contemplation. When considering these ideals and considering our personal relationship to these principles, we have a way to check in with ourselves. Saying them daily in the morning and the evening helps us to advance on our spiritual path, develop strong character and morals, experience greater quality of life, and be of service to our fellow men.
